Project Overview

In Search of Personalized Time is an exploration of time and its perception.

The contemporary world operates in terms of global synchronization. From global finance, to cloud-based data storage, to the many day-to-day functions of the smartphone, we live in an era where the semblance of simultaneity is a defining characteristic of value.

In "Circle of Moment Measurement", a series of participatory workshops at Los Angeles County Museum of Art, participants were invited to explore the concept of time by creating their own personalized clocks.

Each participant was given a wearable timepiece, with a large LCD clock face, and WiFi and GPS hardware inside.

Participants gathered in a large circle, and were asked to close their eyes while holding down the button on their timepiece for what they felt was one minute.

Each participant was then given an hour of their "personal time" to do as they wished around the museum. The button on their timepiece was then repurposed so that they could record and share moments throughout their journey.

After their personal hour was up, participants began to trickle in, and joined in group discussions about their experiences with their personal time.

My Contributions

I was responsible for the design and implementation of the wearable timepieces. While simple on the outside, on the inside they were designed so that all participant interactions with the timepieces and GPS locations were streamed over WiFi to a server, which was running a custom web application that displayed location and participant interactions in real-time as participants moved around the museum in time and space.
